Popular Bassetlaw Sprint Triathlon delivers hat-trick for Tarry- August 2017.

Worksop and the surrounding area burst into life this weekend as athletes of all ages and abilities took to the streets for the fifth annual Bassetlaw Sprint triathlon. Organised by Bassetlaw Triathlon club, the popular race was the biggest yet, attracting over 200 entrants from the local area and further afield. For TFN Race Team’s Andy Tarry, the event didn’t disappoint as he took first overall in a blistering 59:08, sealing a hat-trick of victories at the race.
Spectators lining the route clapped and cheered the novice and seasoned athletes who in return, treated them to an exciting and exhilarating display as they swam, cycled and ran around the fast and sometimes technical 26.4km sprint distance course.
While the athletes were busy on the track, family and friends were entertained by the family friendly activities available on the football field.
The sprint distance triathlon may be one of the shortest distances in the triathlon family, but it is challenging nonetheless. The athletes started in the pool with a 400m swim, before embarking on the 21km bike route through Nottinghamshire into South Yorkshire. On their return, they headed out on the 5km, two lap run, additional energy coming in the form of jelly babies offered by the volunteers.
And after a week of heavy rain, even the weather was on good form, sunshine beaming down on the athletes as they reached the finish line, greeted by delighted family and friends.
The race delivered success for Bassetlaw triathletes too, with 16 year old Ethan Bringloe taking 1st in the under 20 age group in and Stephen Maddock taking 1st in the 40-49 category.
Other Bassetlaw competitors included Ian Wingfield 1:21:39; Daniel Osborn 1:22:09; Martin Philipson 1:24:11; Mark Horsfield 1:29:10; Andrew Barringer Clark 1:29:12; David Rhodes 1:32:17; Nick Paxman 1:47:04; Jackie Rhodes 1:48:19; and Ryszard Wilczynski 1:57:27;
Proud and excited to be placed 1st in her age group was Pina Hannan of Chesterfield Triathlon Club. “It was such a friendly and welcoming event. I was worried about getting lost so was pleased the route was well marshalled and signposted too. My whole family took part and really enjoyed it. My husband was really proud to have cycled for the winning team after losing 5 stone recently.”
Novice competitor Belle Moss was also thrilled with the event. “I did the event last year and enjoyed it so much I decided to do it again and thought I’d try to better my time. The support from the marshals and spectators was really good. It was all so well organised; it’s a great route. I’m really proud to finish 9 minutes faster than last year!”
The Bassetlaw triathlon also provided a much needed boost for the Bassetlaw food bank as generous race volunteers donated food to the vital community project. Dr. Catherine Harrison expressed her gratitude for the donations. “Lots of donations have been received, which is great because there is enormous demand for the food bank during the summer holidays.”
Bassetlaw Triathlon Club chairman Matthew Horsfield thanked all those involved in ensuring a successful and memorable day for all. “Thank you to the race organiser, Neil McGough and all the volunteers at the triathlon today; together we delivered another outstanding event. Congratulations also to everyone who raced today. We hope you enjoyed the experience.”
The organisers also thanked Tesco who provided bottled water and carrier bags.
