ITU World Triathlon Age Groups Grand Final in Rotterdam 17th September 2017

The 2017 triathlon season was brought to a spectacular finale with the ITU World Triathlon Age Groups Grand Final in Rotterdam on 17 September.
Bassetlaw Triathlon Club athletes Kevin Dunne and Joan Kirkwood joined an impressive line up of international athletes to represent Great Britain on the world stage.
Both athletes put in convincing performances despite the extremely technical and challenging bike course, to achieve world placings of 22nd and 24th respectively.
Beginning with a 750m swim in the Nieuwe Maas River, before moving on to the 20km bike course, taking in the famous Erasmus Bridge and the cobbled and narrow streets of the city, the course ended with a 5km run through picturesque Het Park.
Coming just one week after a podium finish at the gruelling Vitruvian Half Iron Man race at Rutland Water, the result marked the end of a season packed with success for delighted Kevin. “I never thought in my wildest dreams I would represent Great Britain. It was a fantastic experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.”
Finishing 10th in the UK, speaking after the event Joan Kirkwood said “Meeting and racing against athletes from all over the world was a wonderful experience. I was proud to wear the GBR suit and be part of the team.”
Closer to home, Helen Crossley and Yannie Duveen completed the Thorpe Park sprint triathlon in London. Hoping to achieve GBR age group qualification for the ETU Glasgow 2018, the athletes completed the 750m swim, 20km bike course and 5 km run to finish 4th and 10th in their age groups.
Earlier in the month, Chris Johnson also achieved an impressive age group placing when he completed the Grantham Spring Triathlon, coming 4th in his age group in the friendly event.
The winter training programme will commence on 2 October, with Monday evening training sessions moving to the Valley Road Leisure Centre. Starting at 7:30PM, athletes can choose between a spin class or run training.
Why not come along and have a go. Club membership details and information about the training sessions can be found on the club website; www.bassetlawtriclub.co.uk
