As I made my way to the Registration Tent to collect my race number I thought of a thousand excuses not to race and
withdraw. It was raining, wet and windy; I have not done enough training; would my calf injury hold out. Its a National
Championship with athletes from over the country competing – would I just look a fool? Having registered I made my
way down to the swim start for a 800m swim around the Waterloo Lake. The water temperature was a little cool at 16.1
degrees so I was very glad that wetsuits were compulsory. As the hooter went for the start of the Aquathon I settled
into my stroke thinking of all the tips I had been given whilst training with the Triathlon Club. As I reached the first
marker buoy at 300m I was glad to see that there were still other swimmers around me which gave me confidence to
push on. I exited the water in a time of 13 minute 51 seconds averaging 1.43 per 100m and I knew that this was one of
my best open water swims. From the swim exit I now had to run 500 metres uphill in my wetsuit and bare feet to T1
(Transition) to change into my running shoes and whip off the wetsuit. This was a good tester for my recent persistent
calf injuries but luckily they held out and I set off out of transition for the 5km run. The 2 lap run course started with a
long climb up to and around the upper lake running on a variety of surfaces but also had some nice downhill stretches
where I could get my heart rate down and breathing back in sync. I completed the 5km run in 28.10, with an overall
finishing time of 46.37 for the race which pleased me immensely after very little training.
If that wasn’t enough I was then given the best uplifting and motivating tonic I could wish for when I got my very first
podium finish. I was presented with a bronze medal for finishing in 3 rd place in the mens 60-64 age group. To accomplish

this at a Triathlon England National Aquathon Championships was so amazing for me. I want to thank all the Coaches
and Triathletes at the Bassetlaw Tri Club for all their help and support!
